4. A low light binocular ‘recipe’

A pupil’s behave is closely depended on a given person and his or her age. Younger people, up to 40 for instance, have usually no problems with achieve 7mm diameter of pupil. After 40 is worse and worse to get 7 mm diameter, and in age of 50-60 and so on the maximum pupil rarely exceed the limit of 5 mm.

How then to choose a night vision binoculars? The solution is simple. First of all you should measure your pupil in the dark (in typical night conditions). It’s easy to do it using a digital camera and ruler. Being in the forest, during a moonlit night, wait until your eyes get used to the surrounding dark. Afterwards put the ruler to you’re an eyelid and take a picture of that. After that, you can easily read the dimensions of pupil comparing it with a measuring rule on the taken picture.

Now, you should consider how high magnification are you interested in. It’s related only to individual demands. Hunters typically use binos with magnification from 7x up to 12x but to achieve a good quality image with 10-12x you should hold a binoculars very unshakably and with both hands. Often it’s very difficult in hunting conditions so many trappers and hunters prefer binoculars ranged from 7x to 9x.
